With this brief, I was tasked with searching for a non profit with a website that allows visitors to learn about events, donate to the cause, and/or apply to volunteer. While the visitor side is rather straightforward — what happens behind the curtain? I was encouraged to build a responsive dashboard that allows users to view information at a glance, while simplifying the process of managing data.
How do we simplify the process of managing donations, events, and volunteers within the nonprofit sector?
Design a responsive website following an existing UI that allows for organizers to manage events, donations, and volunteers quickly and easily.
For user research, I spoke with 3 individuals ages 28-65 that have past and present experience working for non profits of varied specialities.
The site map is intended to keep the flow as simple and straightforward as possible. Employees are often taking on a lot of work, and do not have the time to spend struggling to navigate the site. The less the user has to think about their choices, the easier it will feel to use and interact with.
After sketching and digitizing multiple iterations of wireframes, I landed on a layout that seemed simple and easy to follow. I followed the existing UI patterns of The Sunrise Movement’s website (a real nonprofit with no connection to this project), while making slight visual changes.
With the high-fidelity wireframes completed, it was time to test my assumptions from the task flows.
The prototype was a success! All participants were able to complete the required tasks with little to no hesitation. Users commented that the site felt clean, and easy to follow. They noted that any missteps they took were simple enough to only make once. Great feedback was given, and allowed for changes to to the design to be made and implemented. I enjoyed the challenge of taking verbal information gained during research, and transforming it into a platform for users to interact with.
This project was completed with limited time and resources. In the future, I would love to be able to conduct research and testing with a larger, more diverse group of individuals. User testing could be more in depth, allowing for testing of more features and tasks. With more testing, further versions of the project could be completed and continuous iteration could be utilized.
