Improving the Experience of managing a non profit – Sunrise

How do we help the Helpers?

Background

With this brief, I was tasked with searching for a non profit with a website that allows visitors to learn about events, donate to the cause, and/or apply to volunteer. While the visitor side is rather straightforward — what happens behind the curtain? I was encouraged to build a responsive dashboard that allows users to view information at a glance, while simplifying the process of managing data.

Challenges

How do we simplify the process of managing donations, events, and volunteers within the nonprofit sector?

Objectives

Design a responsive website following an existing UI that allows for organizers to manage events, donations, and volunteers quickly and easily.

Insights on the Non Profit Struggle

USER RESEARCH

For user research, I spoke with 3 individuals ages 28-65 that have past and present experience working for non profits of varied specialities.

  • Users expect to be able to quickly and easily find information
  • Organization is necessary, but difficult with current tools
  • They like to collaborate with coworkers within a single file
  • Users would like the ability to measure metrics automatically
Getting to Know the User

Understanding the User

  • Busy professional that hopes to spend as much time with her son as possible
  • Likes to keep things simple on the technical side in order to focus on the real work
  • Determined to make real change, and leave her community better than she found it
Defining the Product

Creating a Foundation

The site map is intended to keep the flow as simple and straightforward as possible.  Employees are often taking on a lot of work, and do not have the time to spend struggling to navigate the site. The less the user has to think about their choices, the easier it will feel to use and interact with.

Beginning to Visualize a Solution

The site map and task flows were used as reference to determine which screens to create, along with information collected from user research.

Bringing Ideas to Life

Bringing It All Together

After sketching and digitizing multiple iterations of wireframes, I landed on a layout that seemed simple and easy to follow. I followed the existing UI patterns of The Sunrise Movement’s website (a real nonprofit with no connection to this project), while making slight visual changes.

Incorporating User Feedback

Implementing Changes

Taking user feedback into account, I implemented suggestions for wants, needs, and preferences. Changes were made to allow for clarity, as well as future issues with accessibility.

Sunrise in Action

Reflecting on the Process

Conclusion

The prototype was a success! All participants were able to complete the required tasks with little to no hesitation. Users commented that the site felt clean, and easy to follow. They noted that any missteps they took were simple enough to only make once. Great feedback was given, and allowed for changes to to the design to be made and implemented. I enjoyed the challenge of taking verbal information gained during research, and transforming it into a platform for users to interact with.

Future Considerations

This project was completed with limited time and resources. In the future, I would love to be able to conduct research and testing with a larger, more diverse group of individuals. User testing could be more in depth,  allowing for testing of more features and tasks. With more testing, further versions of the project could be completed and continuous iteration could be utilized.
